Melbourne: Goodbye Seems to be the Hardest Word

After a nice big sleep recovering from our huge day along the Great Ocean Road, we headed out Thursday further up the mountains to a lovely little village called Olinda. Think Montville/Maleny, lots of BnBs, lovely little cafes, lots of 'handmade' shops and beautiful foresty views.

We stopped in for a short but sweet and rather moving visit to a restaurant and beer house to pay our respects to the memory of Derani and The Man's dearly departed little sister before heading back to one of the little cafes for a coffee and some delicious cakes. The food there looked wonderful and we were tempted to indulge but we were saving up for dinner that night! It was a lovely, relaxing day and we spent ages just chatting and enjoying the beautiful surrounds.

Then we headed back home for an early Christmas!

We had a delicious feast of roast turkey, roast vegetables, blanched greens with garlic and pine nuts and of course gravy! Mmm mmm it was delicious! We were supposed to have pudding and brandy custard for dessert but we got a little carried away with unwrapping presents and by the time we realised, the pudding was beyond 'warming' and had turned into a burnt plastic mess so we settled for mince pies and brandy custard but the burnt pudding was a huge joke...especially when we could still smell burnt plastic the next day!

The man and his sister's and little niece's first Christmas together in a long time, things understandably got a little emotional but it was such a beautiful and fun night which we continued to celebrate long into the night. And sadly, I knew I was waking up to what would be my last full day in Melbourne. But I couldn't be glum for long, because on Friday we were off to my favourite diner of all time!

You might remember from my last trip to Melbourne how much I raved about Misty's Diner. If you're ever in Melbourne you seriously have to go there, even just once. The food is ridiculous! I suggest wearing comfy pants and not eating much beforehand.

This was my meal, the 'Carb Coma Platter' and they are not kidding!! I couldn't eat it all but it was delicious, although it did make me feel pretty sleepy!

This is what The Man had, the Monte Cristo, touted to be the sandwich that killed Elvis. I don't know about that but I do know it's a killer!!

Can you tell we are all having fun? After stuffing ourselves silly it was sadly time for me to say goodbye to The Man's sister and neice and it was actually a lot harder than I had anticipated. They are such lovely beautiful people and it's amazing what a strong connection we formed over just a few days. There some very big, very long, very squeezy cuddles and a few tears before we finally parted ways.

Trying not to feel too down and enjoy my last remaining hours in Melbourne, we headed over to Route 66 to see the shop and pay our respects since Ross' passing. While we were there we met his daughter Jicki and his lovely lady Ginger and got to catch up and share our memories of this amazing man. We also decided to meet up later at The Luwow. So we headed back to our hotel and got ready for my last night out on the town.

Yet again we drank way too much Cocktail of Doom and had ourselves the most awesome time before stumbling back to our hotel and falling into bed. After not enough sleep I had to get up, get ready, get packed and get myself to Spencer St Station to catch the Skybus back to the airport. Rather hungover I trudged my way through the streets of Melbourne dragging my suitcase and my feet all the way to the station. Then it was time to say goodbye to Melbourne and goodbye to The Man until he came back on Tuesday. It was really only a couple of days until we would be seeing each other again but it felt like we could have been saying goodbye forever. I really didn't want to leave Melbourne or all the wonderful people we have down there.

But after some big hugs and kisses, I boarded the bus and headed back to the airport to catch my flight. And now, here I am.

I miss you Melbourne. So much already. I promise I will come back soon. I can't stand to be away from you and the people I left behind.
