The SugarShakers have been regulars around the Brisbane rockabilly scene for quite some time now but the last two years has seen them really come into their own.
Fronted by sassy songstress Emma-Louise Wilkins, this high energy quartet have been treating crowds throughout the south east to their sweet sounds. But don't let their name fool you, there's just as much spice as sweetness to this four piece.
Backed by a driving drum beat, Toby Mellonie slaps the bass while Rupert Jenner works a number on his electric guitar belting out their own brand of 'filly-billy'.
Their eclectic mix of traditional rockabilly, swing, blues, rock 'n' roll and even a touch of mexicana was captured perfectly on their 2010 7 track self-titled EP.
Combined with their reputation for high energy performances, the last two years has seen them play at The Big Day Out and a number of other Australian festivals as well as supporting a number of major International acts such as Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and Imelda May.
It's so refreshing to see a rockabilly band fronted by a female and The SugarShakers are one of few bands in Australia and particularly in Brisbane to enjoy a woman's touch. Delivering flawless performances, Emma-Louise is enthralling as she channels the jazz babes and sweet-as-pie singers of old.
2012 will see the band return to the studio to record a full length original album. To celebrate the upcoming release of their new album The SugarShakers have given me a copy of their EP (which I already own and can vouch for its awesomeness) and one of their brand spanking new design shirts to give away.
This is promising to be an awesome night and the numbers are already rolling in thick and fast so don't miss out. There'll even be a fun competition for best dressed space cowboy and cowgirl. Even I'm not exactly sure what that means but it will be a heck load of fun see what everyone comes up with.
So get along on the 5th of April from 7pm to get a sneak peek at what your fantastic prize has in store.
Entries close midnight 9th April. Entries will be judged on creativity. Make sure I can contact you otherwise the winner will be re-drawn. Winner will be announced via Facebook and Twitter.
**Disclaimers and all that: I have been given the shirt and CD to giveaway but am doing the write up as a long time fan. I was also planning to attend the gig anyway and the only thing I'm getting in return is my name on the door and undying appreciation. I just like to support the bands I love.**
