Now that spring is finally here, it’s time to start thinking about your spring racing look. The Melbourne Cup and various other equine events are just around the corner and whilst your outfit is high on the list of priorities, we all know that really it’s all about the hat. I’ve never actually been to the races but that doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate the opportunity to get dressed up, sip on some bubbles and have a flutter.
Not being a big ‘hat person’ I’ve always opted for fascinators in the past. Given that I don’t usually get along to any major events, I find fascinators the perfect balance between dressing for the occasion and being completely over the top. Unfortunately, sometimes it’s hard to find something that’s beautiful and unique and affordable. There’s nothing worse than shelling out for something you only wear once or ends up ground into the turf once your shoes come off. Not to mention, with everyone trying to capitalise on the racing season, there’s always the awful chance that you’ll end up wearing the same adornment as someone else. Awkward.
I recently discovered Danger De Lux, killer accessories for sassy kittens. Hand made by one of the sweetest and most talented Canadians I’ve ever not met, the label offers a range of one-of-a-kind hair fascinators, flowers, bows, jewellery and re-vamped hand bags in the rockabilly, vintage, rock ‘n’ roll and psychobilly style. Natasha, the lovely looks and brains behind this operation, sent me a few pieces that she created just for me and they are simply beautiful. They will be high up the top of my list for spring racing this season and she has a great range available in her etsy store and can also make custom pieces.
This look is great for more dressy occasions with veil adding a sense of old world glamour with a bit of sex appeal and just a hint of mystery. The large black gerbra is attached to the base of the hat which is covered in silky charcoal leopard print fabric and the skeleton hands add a really interesting twist to your standard spring racing wear and it’s this attention to detail in the Danger De Lux range that add a flair that really represents your own personal sense of style.
This next look is a little more relaxed and very day time friendly. The hat is easy to wear and sits firmly in place with its quality construction and hardware. The clip is easy to position and stays well without damaging your hair and the houndstooth fabric adds a really interesting dimension to this hat. The purple flower adds a pop of colour while the cross bones and mesh add that signature racy touch to the Danger De Lux line. The beautiful white rose I chose to attach to my dress to tie in with the black and white of the hat and was easy to do thanks to the double hair clip and brooch fastening attached to the flower. The crisp white petals are covered by a subtle white mesh and finished off with small frosted crystals that are sure to draw attention.
I’ve now got my eye on some super cute hair bows, shoe clips and funky clutches but if you get your orders in now, you’ll have a really unique and stylish accessory to complete your spring racing look that’s sure to get lots of attention.
Are you a hat or fascinator kinda gal?
