Wow - Songbird

This week’s Write on Wednesdays exercise is to take a song and write the story behind it.

Write On Wednesdays

I chose 672 by the Dresden Dolls because it is such a beautiful and haunting piece of music and I’ve always wondered what it’s really about. The lack of lyrics also meant I wouldn’t be cheating from the song and could really use my own creativity to come up with something.

She sat by the window looking out over the grimy streets, the rain casting an all-consuming gloom over the city. The scene looked like something out of the Industrial Revolution and she could hardly believe how much time had passed in this modern world.

Raindrops trailed down the glass obscuring her weathered face and her view, or was it just her failing eyesight? She sighed, her bones weary with the knowing of her finality and the weight of the life she had lived.

Breathing in the musty air of the room, she needn’t look behind her to take in this godforsaken place. She knew this room like a mother knows her child, she also knew this room the way the devil knew the sins in your heart. From the nicks in the floorboards to the peeling wallpaper and damp stains, she knew this room for better or worse.

The photos that hung on the wall taunted her, haunted her like ghosts on the moor. She could feel them watching her and she was almost grateful that her life was drawing to a close. Her silence comforted her but she almost laughed, finding it hard to believe she had survived them all. They loved her, HE loved her, but he nearly killed her. And in this very room. If only they could see her now.

With the makings of a crooked smile forming at the sides of her mouth, she breathed her last breath. Her whole body relaxed and her head rested to the side, the most at peace she had ever been in her poor, tormented life. Eventually they would find her, when the smell began to leach from under the door. But until then she would remain in room 672. Her room. The only room she ever knew.

This is one version of many I have considered for this song. In my mind, 672 is always a room it's just the things that happen there and the people that reside there that change. I know I went over the word limit but to be honest I could have written much more. I really enjoyed this exercise though, it’s right up my alley.

This is hauntingly beautiful. I read it once, and then read it again with the song on in the background. Nice work!

Thank you Lillie, it's such an interesting piece of music. It holds so much possibility.

I love how the song is just as long as the read, I don't think it was on purpose but it made it all the more fantastic.
I want to know the rest of the story and that in itself is pretty darn great. Well done!

Great work Sheri. You're right the music is very haunting and I think you've conveyed that feeling perfectly in your piece. I love piano pieces.

She seems at peace as death comes - or at peace with death coming at least - not something all that easy for many I'd imagine. You've captured the scene well, and the music fits.

Your writing is absolute, as I read that the story is all around me and I am feeling the emotions. Congratulations, this is evocative and lingering and I love it.

ohhhh, i really liked this bit..... 'With the makings of a crooked smile forming at the sides of her mouth, she breathed her last breath. Her whole body relaxed and her head rested to the side, the most at peace she had ever been in her poor, tormented life.' I just hope that doesn't end up being me! Makes you wonder what the song is really about doesnt it.

Thanks guys, glad you like it :)

TV, the length was just a stroke of luck.

Thank you flowersinmywords, I'm really glad you enjoyed it.

Eloise, I'm quite certain that won't be you! But yes, I've always wondered about this song.

Glad I stopped in. Nicely written and makes me want to think a bit and write a 'room' scenario of my own :)
